Allergies
Do wool products cause allergies?
There’s a belief that wool can cause allergic reactions but this isn’t true. Real wool allergies are actually very rare. Most of the discomfort people can feel in relation to wool products is actually due to skin irritation from coarser wool fibers and not an allergy. The coarse fibers can cause a prickling sensation when they rub against the skin, but this irritation is not a sign of an allergic reaction.
But with high-quality wool products such as Gotland sheepskin from us here at Woolbase there is a much lower chance for this kind of irritation. Gotland sheepskin, with its fine and curly fibers, provides excellent warmth and comfort without the coarseness or any scratchiness. Unlike synthetic materials real wool allows the skin to breathe which instead of accusing irritation helps with skin irritation instead. This breathability makes real wool superior to synthetic alternatives because synthetic ones can trap sweat and lead to skin irritation and discomfort and often have that scratchy feeling people are used to.
Additionally, because wool has a natural resistance to dust mites, mold, and mildew makes it an even better option for people with sensitive skin or respiratory conditions. Real sheepskin not only provides comfort but also promotes a healthier environment, making it the ideal choice for anyone concerned about skin irritation or allergies.
